Bridging Academia and Industry: Proconics Hosts University of Pretoria’s Future Engineering Leaders
By Dorah Tlala-Tanor
Proconics recently had the distinct privilege of hosting a group of exceptional PhD and Postdoctoral Engineering Researchers from the University of Pretoria, led by the esteemed Professor Michael Daramola. The visit served as a powerful reminder of the critical role that collaboration between academia and industry plays in shaping South Africa’s future.
As a proudly South African engineering solutions company, Proconics recognizes that many of the challenges facing our nation, from energy sustainability and water security to environmental stewardship and industrial efficiency require innovative, research-driven solutions. These solutions are often born within our universities and refined through partnerships with industry.
The researchers represent some of the brightest minds in engineering research. Their work focuses on addressing real-world challenges through scientific investigation, technological innovation, and the development of practical solutions that can ultimately be implemented within industry. Witnessing their passion, dedication, and commitment to solving South African problems was both inspiring and encouraging.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Professor Michael Daramola for his leadership in developing the next generation of engineering researchers and innovators. His commitment to advancing research excellence while fostering meaningful industry engagement continues to create opportunities for impactful collaboration between academia and the engineering sector.
“I am honoured for Proconics to allow me the opportunity to bring about such interventions and lead such collaborations, particularly to support and sponsor students throughout their research journeys’’ said Dorah Tlala-Tanor, the Group CHRO and Corporate Affairs executive at Proconics.
Investing in postgraduate and postdoctoral research is not simply an investment in education, it is an investment in South Africa’s future. By supporting these talented researchers, we contribute to the development of local expertise, innovation, and sustainable solutions that can strengthen industries and improve communities, declared the Group CFO, Bongani Ngcongo.
The visit provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, allowing researchers to gain insight into industrial challenges while enabling Proconics professionals to engage with cutting-edge research developments. Such interactions are essential in ensuring that academic research remains relevant to industry needs and that industry benefits from the latest scientific advancements.
As South Africa continues to navigate complex engineering, environmental, and economic challenges, partnerships between universities and industry will become increasingly important. Together, we can accelerate innovation, transform research into practical applications, and build sustainable solutions that create lasting value for our country. We are grateful for the opportunity to host these outstanding researchers and look forward to strengthening our relationship with the University of Pretoria. The future of South African engineering is bright, and it is being shaped by talented researchers, visionary academics, and collaborative industry partners working together to make a meaningful difference.
Both The ProGO MD, Hans Suurd and Proconics MD, Reginald Mbatha welcomed the delegates and strongly attested to the need for continuous collaboration and their commitment to contribute to the academic learning through playing their role as Visiting Lecturers and contributing to the shaping of engineering curriculum.
At Proconics, we remain committed to supporting innovation, empowering future leaders, and transforming research into real-world solutions that benefit industry and society alike.
